Requirement normalization

We translate a broad lighting objective into a reviewable component brief. The working set can include target luminous flux, operating current, package footprint, CCT range, CRI threshold, TM-30 priorities, optical coupling, allowable junction temperature, dimming context, and expected duty cycle. For horticultural work, photometric terms are separated from photon metrics such as PPFD, DLI, and spectral power distribution.

This first pass makes tradeoffs visible. A high lm/W target may conflict with color quality or compact source geometry; an integrated design may simplify assembly while reducing serviceability. The output is a concise list of requirements, assumptions, and unresolved decisions rather than a generic recommendation.

Optical and thermal review

Source performance depends on the surrounding luminaire. Review points therefore include optic spacing, beam intent, color mixing, thermal resistance, board material, heat-sink conditions, enclosure temperature, and driver operating point. Where project teams use IES or LDT files, those files describe the finished luminaire and should not be treated as a substitute for source-level engineering.

We frame LM-80 data and TM-21 projections in their correct role: inputs to a lifetime assessment, not a blanket promise for every assembled fixture. This distinction helps engineering teams plan L70 targets with realistic thermal conditions and maintenance expectations.

Compliance evidence alignment

Documentation is aligned to the product, geography, and approval path. Lumileds declares UL, CE, and RoHS credentials in the current brand configuration, but each mark has a different scope. A North American safety review, European regulatory declaration, and restricted-substances requirement should never be presented as interchangeable evidence.

Project teams receive a practical evidence checklist that can cover material declarations, source data, electrical limits, traceability needs, and supporting test context. We do not invent certificate numbers or imply that a component credential certifies the complete luminaire.

Qualification and change control

Sample evaluation is most useful when acceptance criteria are agreed in advance. We help define what to measure, how to record binning and color observations, which thermal points matter, and what constitutes an acceptable production result. Procurement and engineering can then evaluate the same evidence instead of working from separate assumptions.

For ongoing programs, change communication should cover the affected source family, timing, compatibility considerations, and validation actions. A clear record supports requalification decisions and reduces last-minute disruption at production or project handover.
